Psalms

A Collection of Poetic Songs

The Book of Psalms is a Collection of songs or psalms written and collected over a  long period of time. It can be separated into 5 collections or books. For every emotion and mood, you can find a psalm to match. They wrestle with the deepest sorrows and ask God some of the toughest questions about suffering and injustice. They were written between 1000 and 450 BC by David, Asaph, and others and although they were written so long ago, they still fulfill our needs today.

Book 1: Psalms 1-41

These are Prayers of lament and expression of confidence in God's Salvation

Book 2: Psalms 42-72

These are community laments. The book ends with a royal psalm.

Book 3: Psalms 73-89

These Psalms are Prayers of lament and distress and are more intense and bleak than the first two.

Book 4: Psalms 90-106

The Lord reigns! This Book presents the answers to the bleakness of Book 3

Book 5: Psalms 107-150

This Book closes with how God is in control, faithful and He will redeem His people.

Key Verse: Psalms 145:21

"My mouth will speak in Praise of the Lord. Let every creature praise His Holy Name for ever and ever."
